Seems like summer’s here, and here’s the latest fishing report
Kootenay Lake:
The water temp has quickly jumped above 60 degrees and we are now into ‘summer fishing’.
The fish are still cooperating, and we have been spending almost every day on the water lately. Lots of travellers coming through at this time and lots of bookings coming in.
Our latest trips have seen some consistent action with a lot of Rainbows chomping and still the odd Bull Trout.
There has been a distinct ‘bite time’ during the day as well. It seems like mid morning and mid afternoon have been most productive. Even during the hot weather, the fish seem to ‘turn on’ and feed at those certain times. So, you just have to be out there.
The majority of the Rainbows have been a bit smaller. Probably mostly bug eaters, as the bigger ones have been drastically reduced by the cull. However, I’m sure some big ones are still lurking down deep, where the water is cooler. We’ll get a few mixed in with our catch, as it’s totally a numbers game.
As of late, we have been catching Rainbows between 1 – 3 Lbs, with the odd 5 pounder mixed in. The Bull Trout however, have been fewer, but bigger. Bulls between 3 – 8 Lbs have been caught recently.
BC’s Free Family Fishing Weekend:
This is the weekend where you can take all your family members fishing, and don’t need a license. So, if you’re looking for something to do this weekend, take your kids fishing.
Nelson Rod & Gun club and Fishing Forever will be out at Cottonwood Lake on Saturday if you’re looking for somewhere to go. There will be volunteers on standby to help set you up for success and take you fishing. It’s always a great event. Check it out!
Looking forward to the rest of our summer fishing.
Columbia River:
The water has come up a lot in the past few weeks and the fishing holes have doubled. This time of year there is a lot more water to fish.
Finding fish along the river banks, below the tree branches has been fun lately. Watching for the hatches and chucking dry flies makes it exciting time of year.
Also finding fish holding in the usual eddies and tail outs.
The typical Columbia River Rainbow from 1 – 5 Lbs have been coming in lately.
And, the walleye are biting as well.
It’s going to be a good summer.
Stay tuned….
What are they biting on???
On the lake, it’s been a mixed bag lately. Because of the hot weather and calm water, we have been catching on our weighted lines with Gibbs Crocs or hockey sticks.
However, once the ripple begins, we are hammering on the Lux Flies bucktails. Lucky numbers 207, 210, 215, 221, 222 have been our best lately.
And the Bull Trout which are few and far between, have been caught moslty on the down riggers on our favourite flasher and hoochie combo. The STS flasher, followed by the green pistachio hoochie has been our number 1.
Hope this helps with your next adventure.
Tight lines……..
Captain Kerry
