Winter fishing is in full swing.  Boats are heated, and fish are biting!

Here’s the latest reports:

Kootenay Lake:

The last couple weeks has felt more like a wet spring than early winter.  Lots of rain has caused the rivers to flow and the lake to rise.  The high flows have added a lot of debris to the lake, but we’re still managing to navigate.

The lake temperature has dropped to the mid 40’s and it seems like we are now in ‘winter fishing’ mode.

What does that mean?  It means the fish are hungry for a few days and the fishing is fantastic, but then they seem to take a few days off.

Our latest trips have proven that theory.  Last week on Monday and Tuesday, we managed to hook into 12 – 15 fish each day.  And then, on Wednesday they were not hungry.  Wednesday managed to hook into half a dozen nice fish, but definitely not the feeding frenzy from the days before.

On Thursday, we had another corporate trip and managed to have all of our boats in action.  The friendly competition between boats kept it interesting.  And, the quick lunch break on the beach added to the team building.  Lucky for us, the weather was on our side that day.  Plus 11 degrees was pretty awesome for a December day.

Between the boats, we managed to hook into about 30 fish that day, which kept everyone entertained.  Even got to keep a few for the BBQ.

Lots of fun times on these company retreats.  It’s become one of our favourite packages.

As for the rest of the fishing, the lake has been fairly consistent.  Rainbows between 2 – 4 Lbs, and Bull Trout between 2 – 10 Lbs have been the norm.  Still more Rainbows than Bulls though.

All in all, it’s been a pretty fun month of fishing.

December should remain consistent, and we will be out regularly to test the waters.  We still have a couple boats available during the holidays, so drop us a line if you want to get out.

Holiday fishing is usually a busy time, so we’ll see you out there.

What are they biting on???

The Rainbows have been chomping on the buck tail flies or the spoons.  Favourite buck tails have been lucky numbers : (Lux Flies) 002,010, 015, 021, 026.  And our favourite spoons have been the Gibbs/Delta croc in brass/fire stripe, or brass/fire wing.  The Bull Trout have been few and far between, but when they are biting, we have had best luck on the Highliner flasher in Lemon lime or STS, followed by the green spatter back hoochie.  Bulls seem to be hanging a bit deeper right now.  Try between 120 – 150ft for best results.

Hope that helps out with your next adventure.

Tight lines….
