The Fishing Report – Nov 2017

October was a fun month for fishing. The weather was a mixed bag, but that didn’t keep us away from the lake or the rivers.

So, here’s the latest report:

Kootenay Lake:

Still catching the numbers in Kootenay Lake, which makes it fun for most groups.  We’ve had the pleasure of  entertaining guests from Texas, California, Colorado, Washington, Idaho, BC,  Alberta, and Saskatchewan this past month, and its been a blast.

Lots of days with 10 – 15 Rainbows coming to the boat, and the Bull Trout have been chomping a lot lately also since they returned from the rivers.

Most of the Rainbows are the usual 2 – 3 Lbs and the Bulls have ranged from 3 – 8Lbs.

November is usually a good month for fishing and so far it hasn’t disappointed.  Even after the early snowfall at the beginning of the month, we have still been out a lot and catching a lot of fish.  Good thing for the heated boats, which allows for year round, all weather fishing.

Looking forward to the rest of November and December to be good fishing as usual.

Columbia River:

October has always been a good month for fishing the river, and this year was no exception.

We still managed to get out and hook a bunch of Walleye and the Rainbows were very aggressive.

Walleye from 2 – 5 Lbs were the norm, and Rainbows between 16 – 25 inches (2-5 Lbs) were taking the fly.

Even managed to hook a few on the dry fly throughout the month.  The giant October Caddis is always a treat for these rainbows.

Expecting the river to produce good numbers of Rainbow throughout the winter months, so hopefully we can get some fair weather days to spend out there as well.

What are they biting on ???

On the lake, we have been running an assortment of flies, plugs, and spoons.

The Rainbows were mostly focusing on bucktails earlier.  My favourites for the past month have been #326, 310, 315.

And lately we’ve been having more success on smaller spoons.  The Gibbs/Delta Razorback spoons have been working well in the Nickel/Brass color, as well as the Skinny G in the gold nugget.
I think anything with some gold in it will produce lately.

And as for the Bull Trout, they have been consistently hitting on the STS flasher with a green glow hoochie.  But we’ve also been getting a bunch on our 4″ plugs.

Favorite depths for the Bulls has been 95 – 150ft.

And on the River, we’ve been catching most of our Walleye on rubber twisters on a jighead, or bottom bouncers with worms.

The rainbows have been taking the odd dry fly, but were mostly swinging streamers or drifting nymphs now.

You can also still catch them using spinning rods with small spoons or using a 3-way rig on the bottom with bait.
