Hurray, hurray, it’s the beginning of May!!
And you know what that means? Yep, prime fishing time!!
Here’s your latest report:
Kootenay Lake:
The lake never really slowed down like normal this winter, as we continued to have some good fishing days throughout March and April. In fact, April has been one of the hottest months for fishing.
Usually the water temperature doesn’t warm up until mid April. Then the fish slowly start to become active again. However, the water didn’t really get that cold this winter, and so the fish continued to feed fairly consistently.
In saying that, the water temperature is almost getting to prime feeding time. So, if April is any indication of what’s to come, then we can’t wait.
March and April saw some good days of fishing, with some days hooking into more than 20 fish a
day. Most fish are still in the average size range of 2 -4 Lbs.
Lots of Rainbows between 2-4 Lbs, with the odd one up to 8 Lbs.
Bull Trout seemed to be obsolete during the winter months, however they have been fairly consistent for the past few weeks. The water temperature must have increased the Bull activity, as we seem to be hooking a couple each day now.
Bull Trout between 2-6 Lbs have been coming in, with the odd one in the 10 -12 Lb range.
Late April also witnessed a bit of a black ant hatch. That’s the time that all fishermen are waiting for. It’s usually the beginning of the best fishing as all fish are looking up.
We did have a couple hot days in a row to trigger the flying ant hatch, however the weather turned cool on the third day, so that shut it down early.
We expect to see more of an ant hatch when we get a couple more hot days in a row, so stay tuned.
It probably doesn’t matter too much now, as the fish have been activated any way.
Either way, we’re looking forward to what May and June have to offer, as they are usually the best fishing months.
We think it’s good fishing now. I can’t wait to see what’s coming.
Stay tuned…..
What are they biting on???
It’s been a mixed bag so far. The Rainbows are pretty much all on the surface and we have been hitting them on Lux Flies, Gibbs Crocs, and Lyman plugs.
Lux Flies numbers 310, 315, 326 have been our favourite, as well as the black ant pattern as of late.
Gibbs Crocs have always produced for us with this month being no exception. Our favourite Brass/fire stripe or Brass/fire wing have been the best.
And finally, Lyman plugs have been killing it lately too. The new 3 inch models have been working best for us in all patterns.
Bull Trout, which seemed elusive through the winter, have now started hitting. Our favourite Gibbs STS flasher followed by green pistachio hoochie has been working well at the depths. And our plugs have been starting to catch Bulls on the rigger at shallower depths.
It’s Go time on Kootenay Lake, so we hope you get a chance to get out.
We’ve got a number of boats available if youd’ like to join us.
Hope this helps with your next adventure.
Tight lInes……..
Captain Kerry
